spacers on a chevy 1985 starter for the starater engaging into the fly wheel. add spacer to engage futher??
Does more spacer engage the starter into the fly more or does it take the starter away from the flywheel the starter seems to turn on the teeth and not engaging into the flywheel fully as of now there is no spacers this is the 4th starter dong the same thing. I have gotter 2 answer and they both disagree with each other . 1985 chevy truck 350 c.i.

When I have had problems with the started engaging I have added spacers. I know it seems strange but that is how it works.
Do you know why my starter hangs?
Wait! this is not a regular starter, this is a POWERMASTER 9612. Cranks up to 18:1 compression. I have a 30 over 350 Chevy engine (new flywheel 168 teeth) I installed it, measured the backlash and the drive gear, everything looked good but it had the ((ZING)) I then shimmed it, same thing. So I installed the spacer for the mounting block, it started with less noise but the gear stays out when the engine is running..... noise, ruining my flywheel. Please do not answer my question unless you have dealt with something like this before. This is not a regular engine/starter. I have never had this problem before. Could this be from the lock plate not perfectly set?? This is the correct starter.... I have removed all shims and the spacer same problem. I have shimmed it way out, (7 shims) it now cranks without problem or fail but when the engine starts the starter drive gear does not release from the flywheel. It sounds and acts like it needs one more shim but the backlash is way out right now, i am worried it may strip the teeth off the starter or drive gear if I add another.
Answer
There may still be a tolerance issue... Does the gear return inside the starter body enough to clear the flywheel? May need to be further shimmed... or bad back lash... needing to have shims removed.
Also... if the gear teeth are not cut right (wrong starter) they will not mesh right, causing them to get hung up on each other.
Be sure the bearing in the drive gear of the starter is not worn, hanging up once spun out.
Just a couple things that come to mind as possibilities.

vw sandrail issues need ideas?
i have sandrail that is powered by a 1600 1970ish vw engine i am having problems when i put the motor and trans together the flywheel hits the bellhousing of the trans not allowing it to rotate, is there different size flywheels or something that im missing. and on the same vehicle when the motor is bolted to the trans the clutch pedal does not have full travel and will not disengage clutch. are there any spacers that go between the motor and trans and the pressure plate and flywheel ?? i am new to the vw scene so any info would be greatly appreciated
